Research Update
There are some of fantastic research projects currently occurring at YSAS and a few more about to begin! YSAS works with a number of universities to conduct research and we have formal partnerships with Orygen and Murdoch Children’s Research Institute.
GRACE: GUANFACINE EXTENDED-RELEASE FOR ADOLESCENTS WITH PROBLEMATIC CANNABIS USE EXPERIENCES
Recently YSAS and Orygen was successful securing a large ADRIA grant to conduct a world first high quality randomised clinical trial assessing the efficacy of guanfacine extended-release (XR) to reduce cannabis use in young people 12-21 years. STUDIES TO REDUCE METHAMPHETAMINE USE
Another research project that Orygen is leading and that YSAS is supporting currently is recruiting participants from community programs. The research is testing potential new medicines for reducing methamphetamine use. A screening protocol aims to identify young people who may be eligible to take part in one or more Orygen studies. RESOURCE LANDSCAPES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE LEAVING RESIDENTIAL DRUG AND ALCOHOL SERVICES
Currently there is research underway at residential services to determine what resources young people find most helpful after leaving residential care or rehabilitation and supported accommodation. YSAS has partnered in this research with UNSW Sydney, La Trobe University, Kings College London and The Ted Noffs Foundation. The research aims to build the evidence for what resources, supports and services work for young people in managing their lives after a period of intense service involvement such as a stay in a residential service. HOW DO YOUNG PEOPLE WHO ARE INVOLVED IN THE CHILD PROTECTION SYSTEM AND ARE ACCESSING DRUG AND ALCOHOL SERVICES DESCRIBE, EXPERIENCE AND DERIVE MEANING FROM THE MUSIC THAT THEY LISTEN TO?
Michael Cameron, who you will know from his excellent work in the Research and Practice team and in Secure Care has started recruitment for a great research project connected with his Master’s studies. This project is looking at what music means to young people that have been in Out of Home Care and how it impacts their everyday life. Michael would like individually interview between 8-15 young people for this project. For more information please see this link.
INTERVENTIONS TO PREVENT VIOLENCE AGAINST JUSTICE-INVOLVED YOUNG WOMEN
Tamlynn Collins, one of YSAS’s fabulous Youth Advocates has been employed by Melbourne University as a research assistant looking at potential services for young women involved with the justice system who have experienced family violence. Bianca Johnston, who has particular interest and expertise in this field, is also supporting this work. More information on this project coming soon!
